PITTSBURGH CONFERENCE SHORT COURSE

How to Select an ICP-Mass Spectrometer: The Most Important Analytical Considerations

Instructor’s Name: Robert Thomas, Scientific Solutions, Gaithersburg, MD.

Location: Pittsburgh Conference, Chicago, IL: March 8-13, 2009

Date: Tuesday, March 10th, 1.00 pm - 5.00 pm

Objectives: The aim of the Short Course is to provide a basic understanding of the most important selection criteria for analysts in the trace metal community who are looking to purchase a new ICP-MS system - and in particular what instrument features impact performance and how best to evaluate them.

Target Audience: The attendee should preferably have used trace element techniques, like flame atomic absorption (AA), electrothermal atomization (ETA) or inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), but also have a basic knowledge of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The workshop will also be extremely useful for existing ICP-MS users, who want to keep up to date on the latest developments in the technique.

Main Topics: The most common analytical objectives will be discussed and how they impact the evaluation of ICP-MS equipment and its sampling accessories. This will be followed by a presentation of the most important selection criteria and the many decisions that need to be made in order to compare different commercial designs in a logical and systematic manner. The majority of the course will be devoted to an in-depth technical discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches and how they affect instrument performance.  In addition, some non-analytical considerations, like reliability, usability, routine maintenance and cost of ownership, will be presented.

Instructor’s Biography: Robert Thomas has worked in trace element analysis for over 30 years - 10 years as an analytical chemist in the metallurgical industry and 20 years in the sales, marketing and product development of atomic spectroscopy equipment for a major analytical instrument company. He has authored over 40 papers/articles on trace element analysis, including a 13-part series on ICP-MS for Spectroscopy magazine. His most recent project is the 2nd edition of his highly successful ICP-MS textbook entitled Practical Guide to ICP-MS, which will be published at the end of April, 2008 by CRC Press. The 1st edition was originally published by Marcel Dekker in 2004.  For the past six years he has been principal of his own consulting company, Scientific Solutions  based in Gaithersburg, MD. He has a degree in advanced analytical chemistry from Gwent College in the UK.
